A driver's day on the A-42 corridor: pre-dawn runs to Barajas, hospital appointments, logistics-park shift changes and late-night returns

The corridor's day has four moments: before dawn, the early flights from La Sagra and Toledo to Barajas; mid-morning, the appointments at Toledo's University Hospital and at Madrid hospitals, many with a wait and return; at shift-change time, the pickups at the Illescas and Seseña logistics parks, where the bus does not go; and at night, the airport arrivals and the returns from Madrid. Between one job and the next you do not look for customers: the next one is already in the app with its time and price. Esquivias to Barajas is 69 km; Yuncos to Toledo's University Hospital, 39 km.

What is the pre-dawn run to the airport like?

It is the job that opens the day and the one the customer values most, because they have no alternative: neither train nor bus reaches Barajas in time for a seven o'clock flight. The app shows the pickup time the customer has paid for, worked back from the flight time and terminal, and the driver confirms the night before. At that hour the A-42 and M-50 are empty, and Esquivias to Barajas takes the 65 min the engine calculates; the price, 106,12 € from Esquivias or 129,93 € from Toledo, is the same as by day.

What differs from a daytime trip is the detail: the customer is usually nervous, has luggage and sometimes sleeping children; it pays to arrive a couple of minutes early, help with the bags and know which terminal each airline uses. The app carries the terminal in the job and the navigation to the departures area, and the trip sheet is already generated when you set off.

How do the Barajas pickup and the courtesy waiting time work?

On arrivals, the job carries the flight number and the app follows the actual landing time, so a delay does not force the driver to wait blind or the customer to call. From landing, the courtesy waiting time set by the operator in the settings, which the customer saw before booking, starts to run; beyond that, the published terms apply. The meeting point is in the job — usually the arrivals exit of the terminal, by a fixed point the customer recognises — and the driver signals through the app when in position.

At Barajas you cannot wait at the taxi rank or offer the car to people coming out: the pickup is always a customer with a booking, with their name on the job and, if requested, a name board. The short-stay car park or each terminal's express pickup zone is the VTC's place, and its cost is part of the job, never charged separately to the customer.

What is special about hospital transfers?

They are the most repeated mid-morning jobs: Toledo's University Hospital, on the industrial estate, from any village in the province; the National Paraplegics Hospital; and specialist appointments at Madrid hospitals. Many are booked as a round trip with a wait, and the app shows it: the driver drops off at the outpatients door, not in the car park, and waits where told or returns at the time the customer sends by message. Yuncos to the University Hospital is 39 km and about 29 min; to the Paraplegics hospital, 36 km.

The passenger is often elderly or accompanied, sometimes with a walker or a folding wheelchair, and the job says so, so that the right vehicle comes. The unwritten rule is simple: help in and out, drop at the door and do not rush. It is the kind of job that repeats every week and that the customer asks for with the same driver once it becomes a fixed service.

What are the shift changes at the Illescas and Seseña estates like?

La Sagra's logistics parks — Plataforma Central Iberum, the Illescas dry port, the Seseña, Yuncos and Numancia estates — change shifts at hours with no bus, and the workforce lives spread between the district's towns and southern Madrid. The job arrives with the exact warehouse as destination, because inside an estate a postal address is not enough; the app navigates to the gate and the driver often carries several people from the same company on a run with staggered pickups that the job details. Yuncos to the dry port is 10 km; from Seseña, 19 km.

They are corporate jobs: the company pays with its account and monthly invoice, the passenger pays nothing and the driver handles no cash. What matters is punctuality to the minute, because a shift that starts late is felt along the whole line, and knowing each estate's entrances, which change with the roadworks.

And the late-night return from Madrid?

It closes the day: the Barajas pickup from the last flight, or the return from a dinner, a concert or an evening shift in Madrid to La Sagra or Toledo. They are usually booked with an approximate time and confirmed by message when the customer finishes; the driver waits at the agreed point and the price is the one fixed at booking. At night the A-42 and the A-4 are clear and the trip takes the engine's time; by day, however, leaving Madrid between six and eight in the evening is the stretch that needs most margin, and the app allows for it in the proposed time.

Frequently asked questions

Does the driver have to wait if the flight is delayed?

The app follows the actual landing time, so the courtesy wait starts counting when the plane touches down, not at the scheduled time. That wait is set by the operator and the customer sees it before booking.

Can you pick up someone leaving the airport without a booking?

No. A VTC only performs pre-booked services; soliciting at the terminal or waiting at the taxi rank is prohibited and puts the authorisation at risk.

Who pays for the Barajas car park?

It is part of the job: it is never charged separately to the customer. The driver uses the short-stay car park or the terminal's express pickup zone.

How do you know the exact warehouse in a logistics park?

The job carries it as destination, with the company and the gate; the app navigates there. On shift runs with several pickups, the job details the order and the addresses.
