Talavera de la Reina without high-speed rail: getting to Barajas, Atocha and the AVE from the A-5

Talavera de la Reina has no high-speed rail: its station is on the conventional Madrid–Extremadura line, with few trains a day taking around two hours to Madrid, and the bus along the A-5 reaches Madrid's southern coach station at Méndez Álvaro in a little under two hours. For the AVE you go to Toledo (82 km, about 65 min) or to Atocha (119 km); to fly, Barajas is 140 km away across Madrid on the M-40 or M-50, and the transfer with a driver starts from 182,97 €.

Why is Talavera worse connected than it should be?

Talavera de la Reina is the second city of Toledo province and the hub of a wide area reaching the Sierra de San Vicente, La Jara and Campo Arañuelo. It has its own hospital, a university campus, industrial estates and a ceramic tradition recognised by UNESCO, but high-speed rail passed it by: the AVE to Extremadura has been promised for decades and the line that does exist is the conventional one, with slow and scarce regional trains. In practice the city depends on the A-5, which links it to Madrid in a little over an hour by car.

For anyone living in Talavera, that means almost everything important — the airport, the AVE, many specialist appointments, the regional government — is over an hour away with no public transport arriving at the time you need. This guide sorts the options by destination, with real times and kilometres.

How do you get to Madrid by train and bus?

Talavera station is on the Madrid–Cáceres–Badajoz line. Renfe's regional and medium-distance trains reach Madrid (Chamartín or Atocha depending on the service) in around two hours, with a handful of departures a day; they work for a full-day trip to Madrid, not for an early appointment or a connection with an early flight. Timetables are at renfe.com and worth checking, because they are nothing like a Cercanías.

The bus is the most used public option: regular lines along the A-5 to Madrid's southern coach station (Méndez Álvaro), with plenty of weekday departures and fewer at weekends, in a little under two hours depending on traffic on the A-5 approach and the M-40. From Méndez Álvaro, the metro (line 6) and Cercanías connect with Atocha in a few minutes, and with the airport in close to an hour with a change.

How do you reach the AVE: Toledo or Atocha?

It depends on the destination. For Madrid itself, the Avant from Toledo does not pay: it takes almost as long to reach Toledo station on the A-40 (82 km, 65 min) as to carry on along the A-5 to Madrid. For Seville, Córdoba, Valencia or Barcelona, on the other hand, going straight to Atocha (119 km, about 88 min) avoids the change and lets you choose any train, including the first ones of the morning.

With no public transport reaching Atocha at seven in the morning from Talavera, the transfer with a driver is what makes the first AVE possible: pickup at home at the time the train dictates, a published "from" fare of 154,20 € for the city, and the return booked for the arrival of the train back.

And to Barajas airport?

Barajas is on the far side of Madrid: 140 km along the A-5 and then the M-40 or M-50 north-eastwards, around 101 min without traffic. The variable stretch is the ring roads: early on a weekday add half an hour. By public transport, bus to Méndez Álvaro plus metro or Cercanías to the terminal adds up to about three hours and does not work for flights boarding before ten.

The transfer from Talavera to Barajas has a published "from" fare of 182,97 €, fixed before departure and valid at any hour. For a pickup at the airport you book with the flight number; the airport page explains the conditions for Barajas pickups, which are provided with Madrid partners and capacity.

What happens during Las Mondas, the fairs and the area's fiestas?

Las Mondas, in spring, are Talavera's main festival and are declared of National Tourist Interest: the centre is closed to traffic during the offering and the parade, and on the San Isidro fair days in May and San Mateo in September the fairground and its approaches are saturated at night. To get to and from the fair from the area's villages — Calera, Cazalegas, Velada, Oropesa — the bus does not run at closing time, and a pre-booked transfer with the return already set is what stops you being stranded at three in the morning.

The same goes for the summer fiestas of the Sierra de San Vicente villages and for weekend weddings: several cars leaving the same place at once are booked as a group, with a single payment, from the groups and events page.

And Talavera's hospital and Toledo's?

Nuestra Señora del Prado General Hospital serves Talavera and its area, and from the villages you drive in along the A-5 or the Jara and Sierra roads. For specialities referred to Toledo University Hospital, the route is the A-40 to the Polígono: 87 km and about 69 min, with a "from" fare of 119,16 €. The Toledo University Hospital guide explains how appointments and parking work.

Frequently asked questions

Does Talavera de la Reina have an AVE station?

No. Its station is on the conventional Madrid–Extremadura line, with regional trains. The nearest AVE is Toledo's Avant (to Madrid only) or Atocha itself.

How long is it from Talavera to Barajas airport?

140 km along the A-5 and the M-40 or M-50; about 101 min without traffic and half an hour more early on a weekday.

Yes, at any address in the area; the calculator gives the exact fare for your pickup point, and the Talavera area page shows the "from" prices to the usual destinations.
