Toledo University Hospital: how to get there from each part of the province and what to know before your appointment

Toledo University Hospital is in the Santa María de Benquerencia district, the Polígono, on the east side of the city, and it is the reference hospital for the whole province. From Toledo's old town it is about seven kilometres across the city; from Illescas, 40 km and about 30 min; from Talavera, 87 km. By public transport you almost always have to go via Toledo bus station and change; the car park fills up early in clinic hours. A pre-booked transfer drops you at the right entrance and collects you when you come out.

Where exactly is Toledo University Hospital?

The new hospital replaced the Virgen de la Salud and the rest of the old complex, and sits in the Polígono, the Santa María de Benquerencia district, right by the A-42 motorway and the exit towards the N-400 and Mocejón. It is not in the old town nor near the railway station: between the old town and the hospital there are about seven kilometres of city, and the city bus takes much longer than the distance suggests because it crosses Santa Bárbara and the whole of the Polígono.

It is a large complex with several entrances: outpatient clinics, A&E, the day hospital and the main entrance are not at the same point, and walking from one door to another can take several minutes. The appointment letter usually states the building and floor; keep it handy and, if you come by transfer, say which clinic you are attending when booking so the driver drops you at the right entrance.

How do you get there from La Sagra, Talavera, the Montes and La Mancha?

From La Sagra (Illescas, Yuncos, Seseña, Esquivias, Numancia) you come down the A-42 and exit straight into the Polígono without entering the city: from Illescas it is 40 km. By bus, the La Sagra–Toledo lines stop at the bus station down below, and from there you need a city bus to the hospital, which turns a nine o'clock appointment into leaving home at seven.

From Talavera de la Reina and its area the way is the A-40 via Torrijos and then the Toledo ring road to the Polígono exit; it is 87 km and around 69 min. Talavera has its own hospital, Nuestra Señora del Prado, but many specialities and tests are referred to Toledo, and the intercity bus plus the city bus easily add up to two and a half hours each way.

From the Montes de Toledo (Sonseca, Mora, Los Yébenes) you come up the N-401 and round the city on the ring road; from Sonseca it is 25 km. From La Mancha (Consuegra, Madridejos, Villacañas, Quintanar) the trip is longer and there is no direct bus to the hospital at most times; from Consuegra it is 62 km. These are the areas where an early appointment, without a car, turns into a night in Toledo.

What is parking like during clinic hours?

The hospital has parking, and during clinic hours, between eight and eleven in the morning, it fills up. Those who arrive on time by car end up hunting for a space in the streets of the Polígono and running in. Part of the car park is pay-by-time with an initial discounted period; the hospital publishes the conditions and they change, so we do not copy them here.

That is the practical reason many families book a transfer for an appointment: the car drops at the door, there is no parking, and the pickup is booked for the expected finish time or requested when you are done. For long tests or day admissions, when you do not know when you will come out, the simplest thing is to book the outbound trip and request the return once the doctor says you can leave.

Is a transfer to the hospital medical transport?

No, and it is worth saying clearly. A car with a driver takes a person who can travel seated in an ordinary vehicle, with their companion and luggage: to an appointment, a test, a check-up, or to visit a relative in hospital. It does not replace an ambulance or the medical transport that the regional health service (SESCAM) prescribes when a patient's condition requires it. If the doctor has indicated medical transport, that is the way.

What a transfer does do: adapt to the companion, carry a folding wheelchair in the boot, wait at the door at the agreed time, take you home to a village where there is no bus at that hour and, for anyone going every week to dialysis or rehabilitation, repeat at the same time and price as a fixed service. For those who need an adapted vehicle with a ramp, the accessible transfer page explains what is available and how to request it.

What if the appointment is at the National Hospital for Paraplegics or in Madrid?

The National Hospital for Paraplegics is a separate centre, on the La Peraleda estate north of the city by the Madrid road, and a national reference for spinal cord injuries: it receives patients and families from all over Spain and many visits last hours. It has its own destination page with prices from each town in the province, because you do not reach it the same way as the University Hospital.

For specialities referred to Madrid (La Paz, 12 de Octubre, Gregorio Marañón, Fundación Jiménez Díaz and others), the Madrid hospitals page lists prices from the province. The route is the same as the airport run as far as the M-40 and, from there, whichever hospital you need; early in the morning, the urban stretch is what varies most.

Frequently asked questions

Which district is Toledo University Hospital in?

In Santa María de Benquerencia, the Polígono, on the east side of Toledo, next to the A-42. It is about seven kilometres from the old town and far from the railway station.

How much is a transfer from Illescas to Toledo hospital?

The published "from" fare for Illescas → Toledo University Hospital is 60,71 €, for 40 km and about 30 min. The calculator gives the exact amount for a date and time.

Does the driver wait while I am in the clinic?

The usual approach is to book the return for the expected time or request it when you finish, because a clinic visit can run long. Waiting conditions and what each service includes are in the general terms, and the price is fixed when you book.

Can a companion come along?

Yes, the price is per vehicle, not per person. Say how many are travelling when you book and whether there is a folding wheelchair or walker so that the vehicle is suitable.

Do you provide medical or ambulance transport?

No. It is a car with a driver for anyone who can travel seated in an ordinary vehicle. Medical transport is prescribed by the doctor and provided by the health service.

A transfer with a driver is not medical transport and does not replace it. Hospital parking conditions and access are published by SESCAM and may change.
