How long does it take to reach Barajas depending on the time of day?

Overnight and until six, the drive takes what the sat-nav says. Between seven and half past nine, and again between five and eight in the evening, add twenty to forty minutes: the jam is not on the motorway, it is on the M-50 and the terminal approaches. Sunday evenings are the worst slot of the week.

Which are the bad time bands?

Three, and always the same ones. The weekday inbound rush from seven to half nine, with the M-50 and A-42 loaded with commuter traffic. The evening outbound from five to eight, the other way round but just as slow on the approaches. And Sunday evening, when everyone who left for the weekend comes back to Madrid.

Outside those bands, the drive from the Sagra area to the airport is fairly stable through the year. The exceptions are long-weekend days and big trade-fair days, which shift traffic on the A-2 and the M-11.

How do we work out the departure time?

Backwards from how it is usually done: start from the flight time, subtract the airline's check-in margin at the airport, subtract the driving time for that band and subtract the traffic margin. What is left is the pickup time, and that is what gets confirmed in writing.

If the flight number is on the booking, we check the flight's actual status and adjust the pickup when needed. A flight leaving two hours late should not force anyone to spend two extra hours in the terminal.

How much margin should you really leave?

For a flight within Europe, the usual reference is being at the airport two hours ahead; three for long haul or if you must check luggage in high season. To that you add the driving time for your band and twenty minutes of traffic if departure falls in a bad hour.

The figures above come from our own operations and known traffic patterns, not from an official measurement: they are for deciding when to leave, not for arguing with an airline.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to leave very early for a seven o'clock flight?

There is no traffic at that hour, so there is no need to overdo the margin: what matters is the airline's check-in advice plus the driving time. Leaving two hours earlier than needed means two hours waiting in a closed terminal.

Do you charge more at rush hour?

No. The price does not rise with the hour or with demand: the only surcharges are the night and Sunday/holiday ones in the tariff, shown in the breakdown before you book. In the quietest bands it may even drop.
