Corpus Christi and Easter Week in Toledo: road closures, how to get there and where you can be picked up

During Corpus Christi and Easter Week, Toledo's two festivals of International Tourist Interest, much of the old town is closed to traffic along the procession routes and the ring-road car parks fill up by mid-morning. The calmest way to arrive is the Avant train from Madrid or a pre-booked transfer that drops you outside the route — Paseo de la Rosa, Safont, Recaredo or the bus station area — and collects you at an agreed time once the procession ends. Dates change every year: Toledo's Corpus falls on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday, and the council publishes the closures a few days beforehand.

What happens in Toledo at Corpus Christi?

Corpus Christi has been Toledo's main festival since the Middle Ages. The Arfe monstrance leaves the cathedral and winds through the old town along a route covered with awnings, with the streets carpeted in thyme and rosemary and the façades hung with tapestries and banners; the evening before, thousands walk the same route at night to see the decorated streets. Toledo celebrates on the Thursday, a local holiday, and repeats it on a smaller scale the following Sunday.

The date depends on Easter: the Thursday after Trinity Sunday, which falls between late May and late June. One detail people forget when planning: on the eve in the afternoon and on the Thursday morning the old town is fuller than on any other day of the year, and the council closes the procession route and the streets leading into it to traffic from the early hours.

And at Easter?

Toledo's Holy Week has processions almost every day from the Friday of Sorrows to Easter Sunday, with the Cristo de la Vega, the silent Cristo Redentor through the alleys and the early hours of Good Friday as its best-known moments. It is declared of International Tourist Interest, which shows in the old town: full hotels, sold-out guided tours and the ring-road car parks occupied from early on the central days.

Unlike Corpus, the road closures change every afternoon according to which procession is out, so the street you came in by at midday may be closed at eight. For anyone moving by car, the practical rule is not to go in: leave the car below, or ask to be dropped below, and go up on foot or by escalator.

How do you get there from Madrid and the province on those days?

From Madrid, the Avant from Atocha is the worry-free option: half an hour, no parking, and the station is outside the old town and the closures. Trains on those days sell out in advance, especially the afternoon return; buy days ahead at renfe.com. The bus from Plaza Elíptica also works and drops you at the bus station at the foot of the old town, more frequently than the train.

From the province's towns — La Sagra, the Montes, Torrijos, La Mancha — the intercity bus reaches the bus station, but holiday timetables are thin and there is no return after a night procession. The transfer with a driver solves both: it drops you at the nearest authorised point to where you will be, outside the route, and collects you where and when agreed. From Illescas it is 38 km and from Sonseca 27 km; each route page to the old town shows the price from its town.

Where can you be dropped off and picked up when the old town is closed?

The old town is restricted to cars all year round (residents and authorised vehicles only), and on these dates it is also closed along the procession route. The meeting points that work are the usual ones outside the walls: Paseo de la Rosa by the railway station, the Safont area with its escalators, Paseo de Recaredo with the Granja escalators, the bus station area on Avenida de Castilla-La Mancha and, across the river, the Mirador del Valle or the San Martín bridge for anyone coming down through the Jewish quarter.

When booking, say which part of the old town you are heading to and where you expect to come out, so the pickup point is on the right side of the city: crossing Toledo from one gate to another with the streets closed takes longer than it looks. The driver knows the day's closures and suggests the nearest open point.

And getting home when the procession ends?

Easter night processions end after midnight and Corpus fills the city until the afternoon: at those hours there is no train to Madrid (the last Avant leaves in the evening) nor bus to the villages. Anyone staying to watch who is not sleeping in Toledo goes home by car. Booking the return with the outbound trip — with an approximate time and a note that it may shift by half an hour — is what guarantees a car at the end, when the taxi rank is empty and everyone is looking for the same thing.

For groups from the same parish, brotherhood or village travelling together, several cars are booked as a group from the events page, with a single payment and the same return time.

Frequently asked questions

When is Corpus Christi in Toledo?

The Thursday after Trinity Sunday, between late May and late June depending on the year, with a smaller second procession the following Sunday. The Thursday is a local holiday in Toledo.

Can you drive into the old town during Corpus or Easter?

No, except residents and authorised vehicles, and the procession route is also closed. Visitors park below or ask to be dropped at a point outside the walls.

Is there a train back to Madrid after a night procession?

No. The last Avant leaves in the evening. After midnight the return to Madrid or to the villages is by car; book it together with the outbound trip.

Where will I be picked up if I come out through the Jewish quarter?

On the west side of the old town: around the San Martín bridge or Paseo de Recaredo are the usual points. Say so when booking so the car waits on the right side of the city.
