Talavera's hospital (Nuestra Señora del Prado): getting to an appointment from the district, and what happens when you are referred to Toledo

The hospital sits on the edge of Talavera, next to the A-5, not in the centre: from the villages of La Jara, the Sierra de San Vicente or the Alberche valley the bus drops you at the coach station and you have to cross town, and the first arrival is usually too late for an early appointment. SESCAM's patient transport covers those who cannot travel on their own with a medical report; for everyone else, a fixed-price car with a driver collects you at home at whatever time is needed and waits at the exit. If the referral is to Toledo, the Talavera to University Hospital journey is 87 km and about 69 min.

Who does Talavera's hospital serve, and where is it?

Nuestra Señora del Prado General Hospital is the hospital for the Talavera de la Reina health area, the province's second city. Its catchment is not only the city: it is the villages of La Jara to the south, the Sierra de San Vicente to the north, the Alberche valley to the east and the border with Extremadura to the west, a large territory of small villages where the private car is almost the only way to get around. The building is on the Madrid road, on the way out of the city next to the A-5 junction, with its own car park and a city bus stop.

That has a practical consequence: anyone arriving from outside on an intercity bus gets off at the coach station, on the far side of the city, and from there needs a city bus or a car to reach the hospital. Anyone arriving on the regional train from Madrid or from Extremadura has the same problem from the Renfe station. For a nine o'clock appointment, the timetables rarely fit together.

What does patient transport cover, and what does it not?

The Castilla-La Mancha Health Service (SESCAM) provides non-urgent patient transport for patients whose condition prevents them from travelling on their own to an appointment, a test or a treatment, always with a prescription from the treating doctor. That covers dialysis, rehabilitation after surgery or anyone who cannot sit in an ordinary car. It is requested at the health centre itself and organised by the contracted service; the patient does not choose the time and often shares the vehicle, with waits before and after.

What it does not cover is the ordinary appointment of someone who can walk and sit: the specialist's check-up, the blood test, the imaging scan, the visit to a relative on the ward. There is no ambulance for that, and the bus does not arrive on time. That is the gap a car with a driver booked in advance fills: it collects you at your front door in the village, drops you at the outpatients entrance and, if asked, waits for the return trip, so that an elderly person never has to wait for anyone on the street.

What does it cost to get there from the villages and from Toledo?

The figures are those of the route engine and you see them before booking. From Torrijos, in the Alberche valley, Talavera's hospital is 51 km and about 40 min away, from 75,00 €; from Fuensalida, 61 km and about 54 min. From Toledo city, for anyone whose specialist is there but who lives in Talavera, the reverse trip to Toledo's University Hospital is 87 km from 119,16 €.

Small villages in La Jara and the Sierra that do not have their own page are ordered the same way: you type the exact address and the price is calculated for that point, with the same kilometre and time criteria. A round trip with a wait at the hospital is booked as a single service so that the driver knows to stay.

How does a referral to Toledo's University Hospital work?

Talavera has a general hospital, but some specialities, tests and operations are done at Toledo's University Hospital, the province's referral centre, or at the National Paraplegics Hospital for spinal injuries. The referral is handled by the hospital itself and the appointment arrives by letter or message; transport, unless an ambulance is prescribed, is the patient's responsibility. It is 87 km along the A-5 and the Toledo ring road, and the new hospital is in the Santa María de Benquerencia estate, far from the old town and the high-speed station.

For a fasting test or a pre-operative assessment the time cannot be moved, and the bus from Talavera to Toledo drops you at the coach station, several kilometres from the hospital. That is why the referral is the most requested medical trip from Talavera: you book with the appointment time, the driver works out the departure and, if the consultation runs long, waits or comes back at whatever time you say. Whoever accompanies a patient travels for the same price.

What should you mention when booking a hospital trip?

Three things: the appointment time, not the time you want to leave, so that the margin is set by someone who knows the road; whether the person needs help getting in and out of the car or carries a folding wheelchair, a walker or an oxygen cylinder, so that the right vehicle is sent; and whether a wait and return trip are needed. With that the service is settled and there is nothing to negotiate at the hospital door.

Frequently asked questions

Only non-urgent patient transport with a medical prescription, for patients who cannot travel on their own (dialysis, rehabilitation, reduced mobility). The ordinary appointment of someone who can walk is not covered.

How far is it from Talavera to Toledo's University Hospital?

It is 87 km and the route engine estimates about 69 min, from 119,16 €. The hospital is in the industrial estate, far from the old town and the station.

Yes, if booked as a round trip with a wait. If the appointment runs long, you send a message and the driver waits or comes back at the time you say. A companion travels at no extra cost.
