Quintanar de la Orden and Villacañas: from the Toledo part of La Mancha to Madrid, Barajas and the stations

Quintanar de la Orden and Villacañas are in the Toledo part of La Mancha, closer to Alcázar de San Juan than to Toledo, and everything big is far away. Villacañas has a station on the conventional line towards Aranjuez and Alcázar, with few trains; Quintanar has no train. For Barajas, Quintanar is 143 km away via the N-301 or AP-36, Ocaña and the A-4 or R-4, from 187,13 €; for Atocha, Villacañas takes about 85 min without traffic. A transfer with a driver, with the price fixed before booking, avoids changes and early mornings with no service.

Why are Quintanar and Villacañas far from almost everything?

Quintanar de la Orden and Villacañas are in the south-east of the province, out on the open plain of La Mancha, and their life looks more to their own area than to Toledo. Quintanar is the shopping and services centre for the surrounding villages, on the N-301 and a step away from El Toboso, Dulcinea's village; Villacañas, further west, is known for its door-making industry and for its silos, homes dug into the ground that can now be visited as a museum. Both have Alcázar de San Juan, already in the province of Ciudad Real, closer than the capital of their own province.

That distance shows as soon as you need to catch a plane or an AVE or attend a specialist appointment. Central Madrid is about 99 min from Quintanar without traffic, and Toledo city is 76 km from Villacañas along roads that are not motorway the whole way. Public transport exists, but it is designed for daytime travel, unhurried and without tight connections. For an early flight, a train at a set time at Atocha or a hospital appointment, the car is almost the only option, and for anyone who does not drive or does not want to leave the car in a car park for several days, a transfer with a driver solves the trip.

What train and what bus are there?

Villacañas has a station on the conventional line running from Aranjuez to Alcázar de San Juan, with few, widely spaced Media Distancia trains, useful for getting to Madrid without hurry or for connecting at Alcázar with trains towards Andalusia and the east coast. Quintanar de la Orden has no train, and its residents use Villacañas or Alcázar station, which they reach by car. Neither is a high-speed station: the nearest AVE is in Toledo, Madrid or Ciudad Real. Timetables and services are published by Renfe, change by season and are worth checking the day before travelling.

The scheduled bus links these towns with Madrid and Toledo, with a limited number of departures and arrivals, in Madrid's case, at a bus station from which you continue by metro. It works for a trip planned well ahead, but not for leaving at four in the morning or coming back at midnight, and with suitcases the change in Madrid towards the airport or Chamartín becomes long. A transfer to the Estación Sur at Méndez Álvaro makes sense mainly to connect with a long-distance coach leaving from there; for other trips, a direct transfer to the destination saves the change.

How do you get to Barajas from the Toledo part of La Mancha?

From Quintanar you go up the N-301 or the AP-36 toll motorway to Ocaña, and from there along the A-4 or R-4 towards Madrid; Villacañas can join the A-4 or the AP-36 along local roads, depending on traffic and destination. For the airport there is no need to enter Madrid: the M-50 skirts the city to the east and reaches the terminals. It is a long trip in which the most variable stretch is the A-4 between Pinto and the M-40 at rush hour, which the R-4 makes it possible to avoid, and the driver proposes the pickup time with that margin already counted.

From Quintanar de la Orden to the airport takes about 105 min without traffic; from Villacañas, the transfer starts from 169,62 €. For an early European flight the pickup falls at around four in the morning, and during holidays and long weekends it pays to book several days ahead. Compared with your own car, the transfer saves long-stay parking and the drive home after a long flight; compared with the bus, the change in Madrid with suitcases. The return is booked with the flight number, with a sign in arrivals if requested, and the calculator tells you whether there is a slot for that time.

Atocha, Chamartín or the Toledo AVE: which station should you use?

It depends on the train. For many high-speed trains to the south and east, the station is Madrid-Puerta de Atocha; for the north and north-west, Chamartín, which from Quintanar starts from 171,45 €. Some destinations are split between the two stations depending on the operator, so it is worth checking on the ticket which one the train leaves from, because crossing Madrid from one to the other with little margin is the costliest mistake of the trip. From the Toledo part of La Mancha, the way to either enters Madrid from the south, and the pickup time is worked out allowing for the rush-hour approach.

The Toledo AVE only makes sense if the trip is to Toledo or combined with something there, because its trains run mainly to Madrid: from Villacañas to Toledo station it is 74 km. For the south, another option outside the province is Ciudad Real's AVE station, and for conventional trains, Alcázar de San Juan. Either way, the transfer is booked for the train time with a margin for entering the station and going through the baggage check, which takes time at Atocha and Chamartín at peak hours. If the train is late on the way back, it is best to send a message so the pickup can be adjusted.

And Toledo city, the hospital and the Consuegra windmills?

Toledo city is far for an area with no direct motorway to it: from Quintanar to Toledo University Hospital it is 110 km, along local and national roads that are not motorway the whole way. Some towns in the Toledo part of La Mancha have the Mancha Centro hospital in Alcázar de San Juan as their reference hospital rather than Toledo's; the health centre and the health card make this clear. For specialities referred to Toledo, the Paraplegics hospital or Madrid, a car with a driver suits anyone who travels seated, with a companion at no extra cost, and it does not replace medical transport prescribed by the doctor.

There are also leisure trips within the Toledo part of La Mancha itself. The Consuegra windmills crown the Calderico hill, in the same area, and during the Saffron Rose Festival, on the last weekend of October, the road up the hill gets difficult and an early arrival helps. For a group visit, a wedding at a country estate in the area or a dinner in Toledo with a late return, the price is per car and is shared among those travelling; if more than four people are going, say so when booking so the vehicle is suitable, and the return is booked together with the outbound trip.

How do you organise a medical appointment in Madrid with a companion from the area?

Some specialities are referred to Madrid hospitals, and for a patient from Quintanar or Villacañas that means a whole day by bus or train: leaving before dawn, crossing Madrid by metro to the hospital and relying on the last service back. With a car and driver the appointment is organised the other way round, starting from the consultation time: the driver proposes a pickup allowing for the way into Madrid, drops off at the door of the relevant hospital, and the return is booked for an approximate time, confirmed by message at the end. The calculator gives the price to each major Madrid hospital from these towns.

The companion travels at no extra cost, because the price is per car, and on a long appointment they handle the paperwork while the patient waits. It helps to have the reports and the appointment letter to hand, to mention when booking if there is a folding wheelchair or crutches, and to request an adapted vehicle in good time if needed, because it is confirmed before the booking is closed. For repeated treatment, such as weekly sessions or regular check-ups, the service can be set up as a regular booking with the same time and price. If the doctor prescribes medical transport, SESCAM organises it, and the car with a driver is for anyone who can travel seated.

Frequently asked questions

What time will I be picked up in Villacañas for an AVE at Atocha?

It depends on the train: to the trip of about 85 min you add a margin for the way into Madrid and another for the baggage check. The driver proposes the time when you book.

Can I book a return trip to Toledo for an appointment?
