Bargas and Olías del Rey, Toledo's northern outskirts: the city, the AVE, the hospitals and Madrid
Bargas and Olías del Rey are Toledo's northern outskirts: they live right next to the city, with an intercity bus that does not cover every hour or every housing estate. For the AVE, Bargas to Toledo station is 11 km; for the National Hospital for Paraplegics, north of the city by the Madrid road, Olías is 10 km away. Towards Madrid you go up the A-42 or the AP-41 toll motorway, and from Olías to central Madrid takes about 56 min without traffic. A transfer with a driver, with the price fixed before booking, covers early mornings, luggage and fixed-time appointments.

What are Bargas and Olías to Toledo, and how do their residents get around?
Bargas, to the north-west, and Olías del Rey, to the north by the A-42, are the two towns on Toledo's northern outskirts, a few kilometres from the city. They have grown with housing estates and new neighbourhoods of people who work in Toledo, in the regional government, the hospital or services, and of families who moved out of the city looking for a house with a garden. For them Toledo is not a trip but the place they go every day: to work, to school, to the doctor, to the station. And Madrid is close enough to go and come back in a day, on the Toledo AVE or by road.
That closeness is deceptive. There is an intercity bus between the towns and Toledo, more frequent during working hours and scarcer at night and on public holidays, but its stops are in the old centre and on the main avenues, not on every estate, and getting from there to the hospital in the Polígono or to the AVE station usually means a change. That is why many residents depend on the car for what in a city would be done on foot or on a single bus. For those who do not drive, such as older people, teenagers or anyone just out of surgery, a transfer with a driver is the way to arrive on time without asking for favours.
How do you reach the Toledo AVE, and what works best for Madrid?
Toledo's AVE station is on Paseo de la Rosa, below the old town, and the Avant trains to Madrid-Puerta de Atocha leave from there, arriving in a little over half an hour according to Renfe. From Bargas and Olías you get there by crossing the city or skirting it on the bypass, and early on weekdays the trains run full and the station car park falls short. From Bargas to the AVE station, the transfer starts from 21,72 €: a short trip booked for the train time, with a margin for the entrance queue at peak hours.
For Madrid, the comparison is simple. If the destination is near Atocha or on a metro line starting there, a car to the station plus the Avant is hard to beat at rush hour. If the destination is northern Madrid, Chamartín, IFEMA or a hospital on the outskirts, or you are travelling with a lot of luggage, the direct car via the A-42 or AP-41 avoids the change and the metro with suitcases: from Olías del Rey to Atocha it is 65 km, and the other Madrid destinations have their price in the calculator. At night, when there is no Avant back, it is the way to get home without staying over.
Which hospital is closer: the University Hospital or the Paraplegics hospital?
Toledo has two large hospitals at different ends of the city, and for Bargas and Olías going to one is not the same as going to the other. The University Hospital, the reference hospital for the whole province, is in the Santa María de Benquerencia district, the Polígono, to the east, so from the north you have to skirt the city; from Bargas it is 14 km to the entrance. During clinic hours its car park fills up early, which is why many patients prefer to be dropped at the door and collected on the way out, with the return booked for an approximate time and confirmed by message when the appointment ends.
The National Hospital for Paraplegics is on the La Peraleda estate, north of the city by the Madrid road, and is the reference centre for the whole country for spinal cord injuries. For Olías del Rey it is almost a neighbour: about 15 min to the entrance. Patients and families from all over Spain come for consultations, check-ups and rehabilitation, and many visits last several hours. A car with a driver suits anyone who travels seated, with the folded wheelchair in the boot if needed; an adapted vehicle is requested when booking and confirmed before the booking is closed, and medical transport, if the doctor prescribes it, is organised by SESCAM.
And Barajas, Puy du Fou and the old town?
There is no direct train to the airport from the northern outskirts: the Avant to Atocha and the change to the C-1 work mid-morning, but not for an early flight. By road you go up the A-42 or AP-41 and skirt Madrid on the M-40 or M-50 to the terminals; from Bargas to Barajas, the transfer starts from 123,21 €. For an early European flight, the pickup usually falls between four and half past four in the morning. On the way back, the Barajas pickup is booked with the flight number, with a sign in arrivals if requested, and the calculator tells you whether there is a slot for that time.
Puy du Fou España is on the outskirts of Toledo and its seasonal night show ends late, when there is no public transport back; dates and times are on its official website. From Olías del Rey, the transfer starts from 39,92 €, and it is best to book both ways at once because departures are concentrated in the same half hour. Only residents and authorised services can drive up into the old town: the driver drops you at the authorised point nearest the address, about 15 min from Bargas. At Corpus Christi, with much of the old town closed, expect to be dropped outside the procession route.
Which transfers repeat, and how are they booked?
On the northern outskirts some transfers repeat every week: physiotherapy at the Paraplegics hospital or the University Hospital, the morning Avant for someone who works in Madrid two or three days a week, the regular appointment of an older person who no longer drives. For these cases the service can be set up as a regular booking, with the same time and price, and changed or cancelled under the conditions explained on the help page. Anyone booking for someone else, a parent or a neighbour, can do so from their own account and leave the traveller's phone number, so the driver lets them know on arriving at the door.
For Toledo businesses and professionals with offices or clients in Bargas and Olías, the business account groups trips into a monthly invoice, useful for visits, trips to the AVE station or collecting clients arriving from Madrid. And during the town fiestas and on summer nights, when many people move between Toledo and the outskirts at hours with no bus, it pays to book ahead and arrange the return at the same time. The price is fixed at booking and does not change with the hour, the traffic at that moment or a detour around a closed street.
How do you meet a relative arriving at night at Barajas or on the last Avant?
On the northern outskirts it is common for the person arriving not to be the one booking: a son or daughter coming back from studying elsewhere, parents coming to visit or a client landing late at Barajas. The booking is made in the traveller's name, with their phone number, and the person paying receives the confirmation and the fixed price. At the airport, the driver waits at the terminal meeting point with a name sign if requested and follows the flight's actual arrival, so a delay does not keep anyone watching the clock in Bargas or Olías. At that hour the drive back along the M-50 and the A-42 is usually clear.
The train is similar. Someone arriving on one of the last Avant trains into Toledo station finds little bus service to the towns at that hour and a queue at the taxi rank when several trains coincide. Booking the station pickup for the train time avoids that wait, and if the Avant is running late a message is enough to adjust it. For an older person or someone with suitcases, the driver can help with the luggage to the front door. The piece on booking for someone else explains how all of this is done from a single account and which details are worth leaving.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take from Bargas to Toledo's AVE station?
About 13 min without traffic. Early on weekdays it is worth adding a margin for the way into the city and the queue to enter the station.
Is the Paraplegics hospital close to Olías del Rey?
Yes. It is on the La Peraleda estate, north of Toledo by the Madrid road, on the side of the city facing Olías, much closer than the University Hospital.
Can I be dropped at my front door in the old town?
Only if access for that service is authorised. As a rule, the driver drops you at the authorised point nearest the address you give.
Should I book the return from Puy du Fou with the outbound trip?
It is advisable: the night show ends late and departures are concentrated at the same time. Dates and times are on the park's official website.
Can I book the transfer for my mother, who lives in Bargas?
Yes. The person booking gives the traveller's name and phone number, and the driver collects her at her address. The piece on booking for someone else explains how it works.
